Get the GL7/GL6 - Official Basketball of FIBA

Posted by The Basketball Professor on 9th Oct 2014

The Molten GL Series was used at the 2014 Basketball World Championships in Spain as the Official Basketball of FIBA, It featured a special edition funky graphic, but is otherwise identical to the GL7 and GL6 available at Basketball Republic.

Play with the best basketball Molten has to offer. The GL series features a flat-pebble surface for grip and control and full-flat seams for more accurate shooting and passing no matter where you hold the ball. Molten's trademark 12-panel, 2-tone design by GIUGIARO creates a truly unique basketball appearance by helping you focus on the movement of the ball while increasing the ball's visibility on the court for both athletes and spectators.

The Molten GL Series when new will resemble an outdoor ball and won't have the soft feel and grip for which leather balls are known until it is broken in. Synthetic or composite balls do not have a break in period, they're ready to go as soon as they're delivered, but synthetic balls cannot replicate the softness, playability and durability of a broken in leather basketball.

Breaking the ball in

Here are two methods for breaking in a leather basketball:

  1. The old fashioned way of breaking in the ball whilst also improving your game is to play with it on an indoor court.
  2. However, we have come up with a cheat way for all you ballers that want to play with the awesomeness of a soft leather ball a quickly as possible.

Here's the cheat way:

  • Wipe down your leather basketball with a dry cloth to remove any loose dirt.
  • Spray half of the ball with the leather conditioner, and gently rub it into the ball using a damp cloth in a circular motion.
  • Allow the conditioner to dry; it will take about 15 minutes.
  • Wipe off the excess conditioner using a dry cloth.
  • Repeat the process for the other half of the ball.
  • Do this process from the beginning two or three more times until the leather softens and loses its glossy, sleek factory feel.

At the end of this process, it'll have a nicely worn feel much like an old leather wallet.

This basketball is reserved for the truly dedicated baller, one that plays a lot of indoor basketball and wants a ball that is going to last the distance and feel better than no other.
